Tips for meeting potential Co-buyers & Co-investors
If you have been successful in locating a potential co-buyer or investor through us then you may be thinking about taking the next step to actually meeting them in the flesh to find out a little more about them and if your personalities are compatible.
This is superb, but at this stage even though you might have emailed each other several times or actually spoken on the telephone, you still don't really know the person, so it would be sensible to exercise caution at this stage - as you would with meeting anybody new for the very first time.
Some basic tips for this would be to: -
1. Arrange to meet somewhere public, like a café or a pub for lunch.
2. Take a friend with you so your not alone, they may be able to give some useful feedback after your initial meeting on things you might not have picked up on.
3. Pick somewhere social to see how this person responds in this environment.
4. Arrange to have a credit report and criminal record report produced.
5. Discuss your absolute insistence for proof of current references, credit reports and criminal record reports as confirmed on their profile.
6. Discuss your absolute insistence on protecting each others interests through Deeds of Trust, Cohabitation Agreements and a Mortgage Protection Policy.
7. Be patient and do not feel pressured into giving your home address or making a commitment yet - it may require some persistence and revisiting opportunities.
8. Be open about your likes and dislikes and what you expect to achieve from this 'business venture' - alongside possible minimum time period to commit to this venture.
9. Get to know a bit about each others backgrounds.
10. Think of this as more of a business venture than a dating experience!
11. Once a good level of trust has been established over an extended period - consider visiting their current residence to get a measure of how they treat their own space.
Hopefully the person you meet will be able to provide this information without any problems and likewise - you should be hoping they express the same concerns about you!
There is little point being embarrassed about asking for evidence and agreement to making security provisions against any joint mortgage - as this is 'business' - as much as you hope a genuine friendship can develop.
